Beaches in Orleans

Nestled on the “elbow” of Cape Cod, Orleans offers a remarkable mix of coastal experiences—from expansive oceanfronts with rolling dunes to intimate, family-friendly bays and tranquil freshwater escapes.

Whether you’re chasing thrilling surf, a quiet spot for a picnic, or a safe haven for little ones to splash around, Orleans has a beach to suit every mood. Here’s a breakdown of the standout beaches in Orleans and what makes each one special.

Nauset Beach

Located along the Atlantic Ocean, Nauset Beach is arguably the crown jewel of Orleans’ shoreline. Stretching nearly 10 miles, it’s famed for its wide, sandy expanses, majestic dunes, and powerful ocean surf. Surfers, bodyboarders, and skimboarders flock here to ride its energetic waves, while families enjoy the food trucks, lifeguard patrols, and ample facilities available during the summer months. Arriving early is key—this popular beach fills up quickly, so plan ahead for parking.

Skaket Beach

Facing the warm, protective waters of Cape Cod Bay, Skaket Beach offers a striking contrast to the wild surf of Nauset. This family-friendly beach is celebrated for its shallow waters and expansive tidal flats that emerge at low tide—perfect for long, leisurely walks. With its westward-facing shoreline, Skaket is also one of the best spots to watch the sunset, casting brilliant colors over the calm bay.

Rock Harbor

Tucked away in a quieter corner of Orleans, Rock Harbor is a hidden gem for those seeking a more intimate beach experience. This small, family-friendly beach's sheltered setting and unhurried pace make it an ideal location for a peaceful afternoon and a memorable sunset view over Cape Cod Bay.

Crystal Lake

For a refreshing change of pace from the saltwater coast, Crystal Lake offers a serene freshwater retreat in Orleans. Renowned for its clear, sparkling water, this quaint lake is perfect for swimming, canoeing, or simply relaxing by its narrow, scenic beach strip. Although parking can be limited, the calm, reflective waters and natural beauty provide a quiet escape from the busier oceanfronts.

Pilgrim Lake

Another inviting freshwater option is Pilgrim Lake, which spans approximately 39 acres. Popular with families and outdoor enthusiasts, Pilgrim Lake offers excellent opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking in a relaxed setting. Its gentle waters and designated picnic areas create an ideal spot for a day of leisure away from the hustle and bustle of the ocean beaches.

Little Pleasant Bay Beach

Often referred to as South Orleans Beach, Little Pleasant Bay Beach is a charming, smaller beach tucked just off Route 28. With its calm waters and understated vibe, it’s a great destination for a quick dip or a laid-back afternoon basking in the Cape Cod sun. This low-key beach offers a more intimate setting for those who prefer to escape the larger crowds and enjoy a peaceful seaside retreat.
